Varieties of Relativism: Indexical, Propositional and Factual

چکیده

Several authors have argued that a range of phenomena calls for a relativisation of propositional truth to contexts of assessment or, more generally, perspectives. I want to defend the more orthodox view that whether a proposition is true depends only on whether the represented states of affairs obtain. I offer an alternative account of the relativity suggested by the data, factual relativism, and argue that a plausible propositional relativism reduces to either indexical or factual relativism. We can distinguish between three broad varieties of relativism. 1. Indexical relativism, according to which certain (sentence-like) linguistic items express different truth-evaluable propositions relative to different contexts.1 2. Propositional relativism, according to which the same proposition may have different truth-values relative to different perspectives—say contexts of assessment, temporal perspectives, conceptual frameworks or states of information. 3. Factual relativism, according to which the facts relevant for settling the truth-value of a given proposition may differ across perspectives—that is, different facts obtain relative to different perspectives. These could be either contexts of utterance or contexts of evaluation.

Indexical Relativism versus Genuine Relativism

The main purpose of this paper is to characterize and compare two forms any relativist thesis can take: indexical relativism and genuine relativism. Indexical relativists claim that the implicit indexicality of certain sentences is the only source of relativity. Genuine relativists, by contrast, claim that there is relativity not just at the level of sentences, but also at propositional level. ...

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners

A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...

Genuine and Indexical Relativism in Truth-Conditional Semantics?

In Zwei Arten von Relativismus , Max Kölbel wants to make a substantial distinction between two types of truth-relativism. According to Kölbel, indexical relativism detects hidden indexicality in certain statements (e.g. moral judgments). This leads indexical relativists to claim that the proposition expressed by such a statement is relative to a further parameter in the context of use (e.g. a ...

Conditionals and indexical relativism

This paper is about a class of conditionals that Anthony Gillies (ms) has dubbed ‘open indicatives’, that is, indicative conditionals “whose antecedents are consistent with our picture of the world” (1). I believe that what I say here can eventually be extended to all indicative conditionals, but indicatives that aren’t open raise special problems, so I’ll set them aside for today. In [auth 200...
